Position Title: HVAC Technician

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, on an assigned shift, a large public building performs a variety of standard to moderately complex technical tasks related to installing, operating, maintaining and repairing heating, cooling, ventilation and related systems including refrigeration.  Position reports to the Manager Engineering Services.

Key Job Elements:

  • Installs, maintains and repairs heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration and steam distribution equipment, with focus on system optimization to lower energy usage.
  • Performs electrical and mechanical preventive maintenance on various heating and cooling systems to ensure continued proper operation.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs all HVAC controls ranging from pneumatics to digital direct control devices.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as hand tools, laptop computers and diagnostic hardware to perform work.
  • Reads and interprets complex blueprints, piping, sketches, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Operates various measuring, diagnostic and testing instruments and maintains electronic/pneumatic testing equipment. 
  • Proficient at brazing, soldering, pipefitting, welding and sheet-metal fabrication activities.
  • Checks and changes air filters, assesses drain problems and performs any needed repairs, installs humidifiers into system and connects water and drainpipes.
  • Skilled at installing gauges and properly charging refrigeration systems.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.

Qualifications:

  • Education – Educational background, academic qualifications and technical certifications are important and required. 
  • Experience – Five plus (5+) years in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVACR control systems for a variety of systems. Educational experience/ trade school may apply.   
  • Skills – Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting, and testing skills.  Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and work ethic.
  • KnowledgeThe methods, tools, materials and equipment used.  Applicable safety codes and regulations.
  • Communication Skills – Good oral, written and listening skills.  Pay close attention to detail.
  • Change Management – Adapts to change; understands that change is constant and necessary.
  • Customer Focus – Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers; establishes and maintains effective relationships while gaining their trust and respect.
  • Organized – Uses resources and time effectively and efficiently.
  • Problem Solving – Solves problems with effective solution.
  • Team Player – Deals effectively and tactfully with departmental personnel and the public.
  • Special Requirements, Licenses or Certifications: Must possess one or more of the following accredited licenses / certificates: limited electrician’s license in low energy and refrigeration, EPA refrigerant certificate, high pressure boiler operator’s license, natural gas certification, plumber’s license as well as related state and local licenses required to operate as HVAC Technician.
